7532 saffron-colored shade sails fluttered along winding walking paths, formed golden canopies, under which hundreds of thousands of enraptured visitors walked along, as in a solemn procession, and transformed the wintry-gray garden landscape into a lively work of art.
“All our works revolve around freedom,” declared Christo and Jeanne-Claude at the start of the construction work in New York. “Nobody can buy our projects, no one can charge admission for them. That’s why our projects can’t be permanent and have to disappear forever.”
Christo was born on 13.06.1935 as Christo Vladimirov Javacheff in Gabrovo, Bulgaria.
From 1953 to 1956 he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Sofia, and in 1957 he moved to the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna for one semester.
His wife Jeanne-Claude Denat de Guillebon was also born on 13.06.1935, in Casablanca (Morocco). They met in Paris in 1958.
She was the daughter of a military officer and attended school in France and Switzerland. Subsequently, she studied Latin and philosophy at the University of Tunis.
The two got married in 1960 and their son Cyril Christo was born on 11.05.1960. Jeanne-Claude and Christo were an inseparable artist duo, until she died on 18 November 2009 in New York City.
He also died in New York, on 31 May 2020.
