The intricate wood carving serves as the foundation for the luxurious gold makie artistry of Ueno Tomihachi, whose finesse adds a radiant contrast to the ebony lacquer ground. The screen features a pair of roundels, one showcasing Jurojin, one of the Seven Lucky Gods, perched atop a spiraled conch, symbolizing longevity. The opposing roundel blooms with an elegant lotus flower, a motif rich with Buddhist symbolism of purity and enlightenment. Surrounding the central figures are smaller, detailed cutouts of dragons, narcissus flowers, quails upon the lotus, and plovers over waves, each carrying significant auspicious meanings. On the reverse, the date of completion is written as December 29, Taisho 14 (1925), with the name of the master Buddhist statue carver Aradaira Yukimatsu, then 28 years old, from Amakusa County, Kumamoto Prefecture, alongside the personal signature, Ueno Tomihachi 上野富八. Condition notes include signs of age such as wear, scratches, and damage, such as cracks in the wooden panel on the back, chips and cracks in the lacquer, rusting of metal fittings, as seen in the photographs. Please refer to the photos for a comprehensive understanding of the screen's condition. Dimensions: approx.
