Three scarce titles about the history of (English) conjuring publications and/or collecting such publications.
By Raymond Toole Stott (1910–1982):
- A Bibliography of English Conjuring 1581-1876 (1976).
Limited edition of 1030 copies, signed by Toole Stott.
Buckram with dustjacket. 288 pages. Preface, followed by entries 1-912, with 18 BW illustrations.
Condition: (Very) good. Buckram near fine; dustjacket slightly fuzzing at the edges (see photo). Inside as new.
- A Bibliography of English Conjuring 1569-1876 Volume two (1978).
Limited edition of 900 copies, of which 850 for sale (supposedly numbered, but if so, done in magic ink; see photo for the claim); not signed.
Buckram with dustjacket. 143 pages. Preface, followed by entries 913-1414, with 6 BW illustrations.
Condition: Good to very good. Buckram very good; dustjacket somewhat smudgy; but have a round knock/dent on front (see photo). Inside endpapers yellowing (see photo), otherwise as new.
By Trevor H. Hall (whose collection Toole Stott says was acquired by the Magic Circle):
- The Winder Sale of Old Conjuring Books (1975).
Limited edition of 250 signed and numbered copies of which this is no. 68 (see photo).
Stapled paper covers. viii+18 pages. Foreword by Percy H. Muir, followed by preface by Hall, followed by remarks on rare book collecting, some minutiae preceding and following the sale of Roland Winder's conjuring-books collection in the years around 1970.*
Condition: Very good. Some discoloration of cover at the edges. Inside as new.
* According to Muir, Hall addresses in particular the degree in which--at that time--"the value of a book is influenced by its physical shortcomings" (p. [v]). There you go.
