FOREWORD
Book signet by Lillian Giberth
BOTH OTH MEMBERS of the Gilbreth partnership hold a distinctive and distinguished place in the field of management. These two unusually gifted people pooled their talents to demonstrate the one best way of doing work. Their contributions to the field of management were decidedly of a pioneer type and set new standards of accuracy in the area of motion study. Before their day, motion study was vague; they made it real and compre- hensive. They have also contributed greatly to the fields of micromotion and fatigue. Furthermore, their work was of immediate and practical use to industry.
The biographer speaks of the human qualities of the Gilbreths. Both appreciated the human problems of man- agement and strove in their work to stimulate the best efforts of the worker.
The outstanding characteristics of Frank Bunker Gil- breth were: an alert and decisive mind; great ability to observe, analyze, synthesize, and correlate quickly and soundly; an insatiable intellectual curiosity and acquisi- tiveness; unbounded enthusiasm, zeal, courage, and deter- mination; marked optimism, great vitality, deep foresight, etc.
