Herbert Menzies-Marshall (1841-1913) - Smacks entering Yarmouth Harbour

A well executed watercolour of 'Smacks entering Yarmouth Harbour' by Herbert Menzies-Marshall, RWS, ROI. A 'Smack' is a traditional fishing boat used off the coast of Britain and the Atlantic coast of America for most of the 19th century. In England the sails had a proofing coat applied, usually after the sail was a few years old, which gave the sails its distinctive red ochre colour, making them a picturesque sight in large numbers and a great spectacle for artists to paint and tourists to observe. Some old smacks have been re-rigged and are now used as training boats for young sailors. This is a particularly well executed study painted around 1890. Herbert Menzies Marshall (1841 – 2\1913) was an English watercolour painter and illustrator. The son of a County Court judge, he was educated at Westminster School, London, and Trinity College, Cambridge. He studied architecture under Charles-Auguste Questel in Paris and at the Royal Academy, London where he was awarded a "travelling studentship". When he returned to the academy in 1869, he decided to train instead as a water colourist. He was particularly known for his London cityscapes, but travelled around the UK and the Continent painting. He was a professor of landscape painting at Queen’s College, London and exhibited his works from 1871 to 1893 at the Old Watercolour Society (277 works), the Royal Academy, the Fine Art Society, and the Royal Watercolour Society. He was a member of the Royal Watercolour Society (RWS) and Royal Society of Painters and Etchers, serving as Vice-President of the RWS from 1898 to 1900. n 1884 he was a founding member of the Art Workers Guild. The watercolour is sold framed, dimensions 36.5x44cm. Please note that shipping costs are not solely the cost of the postal delivery service itself.
