Dogon medicine cabinet from Mali.
The Dogon are a people group from the region of the Bandiagara cliffs east of the Niger River.
This is a medicine cabinet that was used by the shaman. In this he kept medicinal and magical herbs.
The cabinet is carved from a single piece of wood.
It stands on three legs and is closed by a door. The cabinet is decorated with typical Dogon motifs.
Ancestor figures can be seen on the front of the door. This also applies to both sides. A lizard is depicted on the back. The lizard is said to symbolize the pain of circumcision.
