Bazin was born in Paris in 1897 but later moved to Santiago, Chile, where his parents taught at the College of Art. Bazin returned to Paris as a young man and was drafted into the war effort in 1916. Bazin was affiliated with a squadron of the French Air Force and came into contact with Hispano-Suiza for the first time. The history of the company has its origins in the Spanish automobile manufacturer of the same name, which was founded in Barcelona in 1904 with the leading participation of Swiss designer Marc Birkigt.
