Description:
Like the Greek sculptors, the Romans preferred bronze and marble for their best works. However, as metal has always been in great demand for reuse, most surviving examples of Roman sculpture are in marble. The bronzes are often fragmentary, such as this forearm, which must have been part of a monumental sculpture. The muscular structure is modeled with great skill, pursuing a realistic effect that combined with the idealization of the canon. The delicacy of the hand stands out, with its fingers bent naturally, as well as the precision of the nails. This was probably an important character, given that the pieces of generous dimensions were usually statues of emperors, gods and heroes. Remember the huge bronze statues of Marcus Aurelius on horseback or the statue of Constantine I (only the head, hand and some limbs are preserved), which now reside in the Capitoline Museums in Rome.
