霍貢船 - 奧戈巴尼亞 - Dogon - 馬里
This intricately carved, monumental container was utilized to store food consumed during the ceremonial rituals of Dogon religious and political leaders known as hogon. Hogon serve as the chief priests of the cult of Lebe, the first Dogon ancestor to pass away, whose body was believed to have transformed into a snake after death. Linked with themes of regeneration and rejuvenation, the cult is tasked with preserving the fertility of the earth and safeguarding the welfare of Dogon society.
The significant size and ornate detailing of this vessel underscore the hogon's central role within Dogon communities. The presence of the horse supporting the container traditionally symbolizes wealth, prestige, and social authority. However, within this context, it also signifies the hogon's symbolic position within the Dogon cosmological framework. It aligns the hogon with Nommo, the legendary entity that metamorphosed into a horse to transport an ark carrying the eight primordial ancestors to earth.
Known as ogo banya, this type of container was originally fitted with a lid. Unfortunately, in this instance, the lid has been lost. Despite some damages and missing parts, the intricate carving of the horse, the overall harmony of the artwork, the scarified patterns, and the lustrous blond patina enhance the collectible value of this container.
