燈籠 - 花崗岩

An exceptional 4-part hand-carved granite garden lantern, known as a ‘Yukimi Ishi’dôrô’ 雪見石灯籠 (snow-showing lantern on square base). Charmingly shaped like a bulbous chrysanthemum flower 菊 (kiku). The roof and base form plum petals and the knob shaped like the hearth of the flower. Its individual parts are represent the following: The bottom part, in chrysanthemum shape raised by four low feet, the chûdai 中台 ('central platform') represents sui 水 (water). Ka 火 (fire), is represented by the circular shaped section encasing the lantern's light or flame 火袋 (hibukuro). Its hibukuro with a nice reticulated design of a crescent moon and a sun on opposite sides. Square openings with indented rims on the other two sides, to be able to place a light source (ensô). Fû 風 (air) and kû 空 (void or spirit) are represented by the last two sections, top-most and pointing towards the sky. A garden lantern like this is rare to be seen. The age of these lanterns is difficult to determine. We think that this one is from the Second half of the 19th century (Early Meiji period). It has an appealing outdoorsy patina by being placed outside for many years and is completely hand carved. Approx. dimensions: Height 53 cm, Diameter of the top part: 58 cm. Condition: This piece is in beautiful very good original condition. Please have a look at the photos for a condition reference. We will use a wooden pallet and good packing for safe transport. When shipped we will also add a certificate of authenticity.
