DESCRIPTION This is a beautiful Japanese kokeshi. Almost good condition artist: 藤川正衛 Fujikawa Shoei, born in Shibukawa City, Gunma Prefecture, in the 17th year of the Showa era (1942). Studied under master Ishida Kanji, the first chairman of the Gunma Prefecture Kokeshi Cooperative. Became independent and started creative activities as Fujikawa Kogei in the 37th year of the Showa era (1962). Received various awards, including the Prime Minister's Award. Dimensions 23 × 9.35 × 9.35 cm Kokeshi are wooden handmade artisanal dolls from Japan. The most prevalent theory is that they appeared during the Tempo period (1830 - 1843) in the mountainous Tohoku region. Initially, they were intended as toys for the children.
