A fine hand-carved granite figure depicts the revered monk Kûkai 空海 (774-835) in a seated posture. In his right hand, he wields a gold-painted double-vajra, and in his other hand, he holds ojuzu 数珠 (counting beads). He presents a calm, meditative demeanour, dressed in neatly folded robes adorned with a decorative cord over his shoulder.
Originally named Saeki no Mao 佐伯 眞魚, he was posthumously honoured as Kôbô Daishi 弘法大師, translating to "The Grand Master who Propagated the Dharma." Kûkai was a distinguished Japanese Buddhist monk, calligrapher, and poet, renowned for founding the esoteric Shingon school of Buddhism.
