Up for auction is a remarkable Brass Buddhist Keko from the Meiji era, precisely dated to December of Meiji 41 (1908). A Keko is a ceremonial container used in Buddhist rituals to hold offerings of fragrant flowers before the Buddha, embodying a sacred tradition in temple decor. This exquisite piece showcases an elaborate openwork design of lotus leaves, centered around a serene relief of the Buddha, casting an aura of deep spiritual reverence.
This Keko was specially commissioned by Ueno Tsunejiro as a devout contribution to the Menshoji Temple located in Hirata-cho, Hikone City, Shiga Prefecture. The detailed inscriptions on its reverse side disclose its noble origins and purpose, while the craftsmanship speaks volumes of the era's devotional aesthetics, meticulously capturing every detail to invoke a divine presence.
Despite its age, the artifact retains a majestic patina that highlights its historical and religious significance. It's important to note a minor loss of one ring on the back hardware, which nonetheless does not diminish its spiritual essence. Please refer to
the provided photographs to fully appreciate the condition and beauty of this piece.
