Eros to the east Nobuyoshi Araki Kobunsha/1994/Japanese/250*323*15 Nobuyoshi Araki, known by the nickname "Araki," is one of Japan's leading photographers. Influenced by his father, a clog maker and amateur photographer, Araki took up photography. After graduating from the Department of Photography and Printing Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, Chiba University, he began working for Dentsu Inc. While taking advertising photographs, he explored new photographic art forms using the company's equipment, producing sensational works such as "Oh Japan" and "Sentimental Journey" from the 1970s. This book is a collection of "lewd" photographs of actress Yuko Mizushima, and is thought to have been inspired by Kafu Nagai's novel "Pantou Kitan" (濹東綺譚). Mizushima was one of the most popular sexy idols of the 1980s, active in late-night TV shows and popular in movies such as Nikkatsu Roman Porno. Against the backdrop of a townscape that retains a downtown atmosphere in the Sumoto area (east side of the Sumida River, around Sumida Ward), Mizushima is depicted as a bewitching figure in the image of a prostitute. The interspersed landscape photographs evoke nostalgia, and the mix of color and black-and-white in the composition gives the novel's world a past and present feel.
