A fine collection of 5 ropes of old Ghanaian glass beads. These beads were made using ground-up bottles which were then poured into moulds and fired in tradilional kilns in the region of Kumasi, Ghana. A speciality of the Ashanti-people in this country. This technique makes it possible to alternate different layers of coloured powder-glass into moulds. Sometimes thin lines of different colours were inserted into a uni-coloured matrix. A special reference has to be made for the rope containing pink-coloured glass beads; a rare to find colour. Sometimes very thin lines of blue powder-glass were inserted into this pink matrix. Some tear and wear is visible on these ropes of beads , due to their long use as jewelry. All beads were collected in the city of Kumasi in the 1990's.
