Ancient Romano-Egyptian Glass Spool-shaped Unguentarium
Circa 2nd-3rd century AD
This glass spool-shaped unguentarium features a beautiful blue colouration, a broad tubular neck, and a main body with a flattened base and sloped sides. It served as a container for holding perfumes, oils, or ointments.
Unguentarium, derived from the Latin word "unguentum" meaning "ointment," is a vessel used for storing and dispensing perfumed oils, ointments, and other aromatic substances. Typically crafted from glass, or ceramic, unguentaria came in various shapes and sizes, ranging from small, flask-like containers to larger vessels with elongated necks and narrow mouths. These containers often featured a narrow neck and a wide body, facilitating the controlled pouring or application of the stored liquids. Unguentaria were commonly used in religious rituals, funerary practices, and daily grooming routines across ancient civilizations such as Ancient Egypt, Greece, and Rome.
