Erich Lessing - Revolution in Hungary. The 1956 Budapest Uprising - 2006

Fantastic book by Magnum photographer Erich Lessing about the "Revolution in Hungary". New, mint, unread; still originally shrink-wrapped in publisher's plastic foil. In 1951 David 'Chim' Seymour invited ERICH LESSING to join MAGNUM Photos, a photographic cooperative with offices in Paris, New York, London and Tokyo. So ERICH LESSING became one of the earliest members of the legendary MAGNUM photo cooperative - a full MAGNUM member in 1955 and he has been a MAGNUM contributor since 1979. The Austrian ERICH LESSING (1923-2018) is a legend in photography. IF YOU WIN MORE THAN 1 BOOK IN THIS AUCTION, YOU WILL PAY ONLY 1 X SHIPPING COSTS - WORLDWIDE. “I never thought of myself as doing anything other than telling stories,” said Lessing. “The camera became the medium through which I did that, but I don’t carry a camera everywhere I go. To me, it is simply the means to a very specific end. I observe the world through my eyes and not through the viewfinder of a camera. I don’t interpret, nor do I adjust anything in the dark room. I am a realistic photographer.” - Erich Lessing - "During the course of his career, Erich Lessing covered many significant political and social events. His photographs illustrated the atmosphere of post-war Europe, from the Allied occupation of Vienna, to the reconstruction of war-ravaged Germany, as well as the realities of life under communist rule in Eastern Europe, Charles de Gaulle’s visit to Algeria in 1958, and the dramatic events of the Hungarian revolution in 1956." (Magnum website) Thames and Hudson. 2006. First edition, first printing. Hardcover with dustjacket. 303 x 312 mm. 249 pages. 190 photos in black and white. Text: George Konrad, Francois Kejto, Nicholas Bauqueta. Text in english Great photobook - in perfect condition. "On October 23, 1956, what began as a mass rally in Budapest quickly evolved into the Hungarian Revolution. Within days, millions of Hungarians were supporting the revolt. It lasted until November 4th when it was crushed by Hungarian Security Police and Soviet tanks and artillery. Between 25.000 and 50.000 Hungarian rebels and 7.000 Soviets were killed, thousands were injured, and nearly a quarter of a million people left the country as refugees. Erich Lessing was the first photographer to arrive in Hungary, and he documented the short-lived uprising and its aftermath in a series of world-famous photographs, reproduced here in stunning duotone. They bring to life once more the hope and euphoria of the first days of the revolt, so soon to be followed by the pain and punishment of its brutal suppression. 230 duotone illustrations."
