A fine ancient electrum pendant with the body modelled in the shape of a kite with a trefoil apex, framed by delicate filigrees and decorated with nine domes. To the reverse are five rounded and 2 drop-shaped indentations for inlays. The pendant terminates with a turquoise rhomboid glass bead enclosed by two circular red glass beads. A suspension loop sits at the top. The bottom drop-shaped cloison has been pierced though the centre and a further loop has been added later in antiquity.
As in many ancient societies, jewellery was an important social marker used to demonstrate wealth and status. In Ancient Greek culture, jewellery was worn in everyday life but was also buried with the decease as part of his or her funerary outfit. Jewellery might have been enriched by precious and semi-precious stones and decorative motives would have included popular myths, gods, goddesses, and heroes. Jewellery such as this beautiful miniature pendant was crafted and intended for everyday use, instead of being destined exclusively to a funerary purpose.
