This is a Katakiri Kebori Tsuba made in the Edo period.
Katakiri Kebori is a technique in which a chisel with a flat but slightly slanted tip is used to engrave the brush strokes of the tsuke-tachi-ga technique used in paintings. Carve thinly with one knife.
Tsuba is a type of ``sword fitting'' that is the exterior of a sword, and is a metal fitting that is sandwiched between the ``sheath'' and the ``blade.''
It is a tsuba made of oboro silver.
Shibuichi is an alloy of silver and copper that is an ancient Japanese colored gold used in metal crafts. The name comes from the fact that the proportion of silver in the alloy is one quarter. It is also called oboro-gin because it shows a beautiful silver-gray color when finished with a boiled color. Oborogin also includes silver that has a pear finish applied to its surface to eliminate its luster.
This is a beautiful piece with a lion drawing. Comes with a specially preserved sword attachment certificate of authenticity.
