A youth portrait of William the Second of Orange 1626-1650, Stadhouder of the 17 Dutch provinces ( including the Southern Netherlands). Son of Prince Frederick Hendrik van Oranje and Amalia van Solms. William married 14 years old to Maria Henrietta Stuart, daugther of King Charles the First of England. She was 9 years old. This portrait is painted in oil of an oak panel in the studio of the Utrecht painter Gerard van Honthorst ( 1592-1656). In 1647 Gersrd van Honthorst painted a marriage portrait of this Royal couple that is now in Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam. The portrait I offer for sale seems to be a detail from this portrait. The portrait is in excellent condition and is placed in an antique Italian fruit wood frame of circa 11600. Frame size 75 x 57 cm. Provensnce; private collection South Africa
