Biography Shimura Tatsumi (1907-1980) Born in 1907 in Takasaki City, Gunma Prefecture, Shimura Tatsumi initially studied beauty portraits under Yamakawa Shuho from 1924, after which he ventured into illustrations on Shuho's recommendation. He exhibited his paintings at societies led by figures like Kaburaki Kiyokata, his mentor Shuho, and Ito Shinsui. Shimura became renowned as an illustrator through magazine covers and gained popularity alongside Iwata Sentaro with illustrations for works such as the serialized novel "Tange Sazen" by Hayashi Fubo. In his later years, he returned to Japanese paintings and beauty portraits, his original passions, and served as the president of the Federation of Publishing Artisans. In 1976, he won the Japan Writer's Club Award for his collection "Hyakutai no Bijin" (One Hundred Forms of Beauty). He passed away in 1980 at the age of 73.
