WWII sterling silver cigarette case with maritime naval interest. Commemorating the capture of an Italian submarine by a British-armed trawler. The case is large, with a slim rounded body and Art Deco engine-turned decoration to both halves. There is a vacant cartouche to the lid for personalised engraving.
The inside is engraved with the image of HMS Moonstone and bears the following inscription:
"Galileo Galilei" Captured off Aden by H.M.S. "Moonstone" 19-6-40
(H.M.I.S.. "Cornwallis" in the hunt)
HMS Moonstone was an armed trawler of the Royal Navy employed in anti-submarine warfare duties during the Second World War. While serving in the Mediterranean Sea she captured the Italian submarine Galileo Galilei.
