Ancient Roman Bronze Mercury Statuette
Circa 2nd-3rd century AD
This lovely cast bronze statuette depicts the god Mercury in a dynamic pose, standing with a slight sway to the side. Mercury, the Roman god of commerce, communication, and travel, is portrayed here with a bare torso and a head turned to his right.
Statuettes like this were often used in religious rituals or as decorative items in Roman households, invoking the protection and guidance of Mercury in matters of trade and travel.
