J'ai déménagé à Los Angeles quand j'étais adolescent, puis à New York où j'ai suivi divers cours liés à la photographie à la New School et à NYU. J'ai découvert la magie d'un album photo pour la première fois à l'âge de huit ans. J'ai véritablement commencé à photographier à l'âge de douze ans. Établir un contact visuel avec quelqu'un qui me regardait depuis un autre moment et un autre endroit, c'était comme si un pinceau en martre avait été passé sur ma poitrine. J'étais accro. Puis, en 1965, Polaroid a présenté un appareil photo bon marché, que j'ai acheté avec les épargnes de mon argent de poche. Avec ce simple appareil photo, j’ai commencé une vie à prendre des photos. Cette série, "Velours Noir", a commencé avec un groupe de rencontre à Los Angeles. Chaque semaine, un lieu était désigné, généralement dans une rue abandonnée du quartier des entrepôts. Un groupe de photographes brandissant des lumières parapluie et des appareils photo haut de gamme s'est réuni avec une petite troupe d'individus créatifs portant un maquillage et des costumes fantastiques. Lors de mon deuxième tour, j'ai apporté un morceau de velours noir pour éliminer les clôtures anti-ouragan et la tôle ondulée en arrière-plan. J’ai dès lors commencé à remplir mes photographies de ces sujets costumés et fortement maquillés. Lorsque j'ai déménagé à l'étranger, j'ai continué la série et j'ai également commencé à ajouter des études en noir et blanc. C’est lors de mon séjour en Inde que le concept de réincarnation a commencé à m’intéresser. J'y ai rencontré des gens qui parlaient des vies antérieures comme d'une réalité acceptée. I moved to Los Angeles as a teenager and then to New York where I attended various photography related courses at The New School and NYU. I've been photographing since I was twelve. I first discovered a photo album when I was eight years old. Making eye contact with someone staring back at me from another time and place felt as though a sable brush had been dragged across my chest. I was hooked. Then in 1965 Polaroid introduced an inexpensive camera, which I purchased with money I saved from my allowance. With that simple camera, I began a lifetime of taking pictures. This series "Velours noir" began with a meet up group in Los Angeles. Each week a location was designated, usually on some abandoned street in the warehouse district. A cadre of photographers wielding umbrella lights and high-end cameras met up along with a small troupe of creative individuals wearing fantastical makeup and costumes. On my second go round I brought along a piece of black velvet to eliminate the hurricane fences and corrugated metal in the background. I began filling my photographs with these costumed and heavily made up subjects. When I moved abroad I kept up the series and also began adding black and white studies. It was while I was in India that the concept of reincarnation started to interest me. I met people there who spoke of past lives as an accepted reality. Reinterpreting a lot of portraits from my archives I began taking the gaze of one person and placing it on the torso of another, which helped me, play o ut the controversial notion that we had all been here before in a different guise. » #freshtalents
