A wonderful antique kepping statue of Lord Vishnu , seated on the mythical bird the Garuda holding a club ,
the Kaumodaki, his most potent weapon and destroyer of evil.
This statue consists mainly out of antique Chinese coins, kèpèng, tied together with dark string
a traditional art method in Bali.
Head, hands and feet of the statue are carved in wood.
The kèpèng coins were brough into Indonesia by the Chinese merchants.
The Balinese believe that all metals have mystical power and use the coins for offerings on
special occasions and as decorations for their temples or shrines.
Among the coins of the statue are some old dutch ones , dating back from the Dutch colonial period..
Overall the coins have , through the passing of time, obtained a nice patina.
