Delicate and striking stute of the Madonna with Child. Polychromy and gold leaf on wood, Spain, 17th Century. This piece has a rather rare and unique iconography which makes it complex and interesting. Here, we can see the Virgin Mary in long robes holding her child Jesus Christ on her left arm as he is reaching out with both arms for the bunch of grapes she is presenting to him, this iconography alludes to the fact that the Virgin Mary is ofering humanity, the "flock" which is represented by the grapes to Jesus Christ as he is reaching over for their salvation, since he is the vine, the true source of life for us believers. We are branches connected to Him. The crown is made of solid silver, later work (Probably XIX Century) Measurements 30 x 7 x 5 cms Condition Outstanding condition, no upperbody extremities missing, all fingers, nose, arms in their place, only left foot missing. Original polychromy (some flacking and craquerule present), varnish tarnished. Professionally packed and shipped with upmost care.
