Born in Cateau Cambrésis, Matisse began painting during a convalescence in 1890 and decided to become a visual artist, despite the opposition of his parents. He studied at the Julian School and the School of Fine Arts in Paris, where he received classes from the symbolist painter Gustave Moreau. Matisse is known for his innovative use of color and form in his paintings, sculptures, and drawings. He was one of the leaders of the Fauvist movement, characterized by the use of pure colors and a representation of the violence of emotions. His work is based on simplification, stylization, and synthesis.
