In 1680 (Enpo 8th year), Doi Maryo, a native of the Hizen no Kuni Hirado domain (present-day Hirado City, Nagasaki Prefecture), became the representative craftsman of Osaka Shinto, Inoue Shinkai. Studied under Shinkai Inoue.
When he returned to Hirado in 1682, he was taken in by the Matsuura family, the lord of the same domain, and the same inscription continued for five generations until the end of the Edo period. Most of the swords made by the first generation, Mariyo, were wakizashi, and swords were rare.
The construction of this sword is wide and thickly layered, giving it the powerful appearance favored by samurai families, with well-packed small plates, thick jinie, and a bright iron-colored forging. The hamon is based on a shallow bay, has a deep smell, and the bright and clear habutsu is a masterpiece with beautiful light and excellent workmanship.
