A Roman bright blue glass medallion featuring a moulded decoration of a zoomorphic creature, possibly a lion. The creature is portrayed in a rampant position, with its tail raised upwards, paws raised and legs apart – conveying a sense of movement. The piece has been repaired.
Such glass medallions would possibly have been a decorative part of a wall or vessel. Iconographies were extremely differentiated, including apotropaic symbols, images of deities and animals.
Measurements: W 4.8cm
Provenance: Ex S.M. Collection, London, Mayfair, acquired 1970s-90s.
