Jean-Louis Lachaume de Gavaux, known as Chéret, has painted settings for the great Parisian operas (Offenbach, Verdi...). He also exhibited at the Paris Salon from 1857 to 1880. Our painting is undoubtedly a preparatory painting for an opera set.
