The band was formed when Keith Emerson and Greg Lake decided to work together again after Emerson, Lake & Palmer (ELP) had taken a break. Carl Palmer was unavailable due to commitments with Asia, which led to drummer Cozy Powell joining the band. The formation retained the virtuosic musicianship and ambitious musical approach that characterized ELP.
