Alfa Romeo - 1900 Sprint Pininfarina Cabriolet - 1954

According to the most respected Alfa Romeo books, the final flowering of the 1900 was the Super series, of which the Berlina, or saloon, and the 1900C Super Sprint were produced from 1953 to 1958. The Super series was mainly distinguished by the fact that the engine was enlarged, raising its capacity from 1.884cc to 1.975cc, with a horsepower upgraded up to 100 hp. The Sprints performed exceptionally well in competition, as they were capable of 112 mph in race trim, and they were driven by such legends as Juan Manuel Fangio in the 1952 Mille Miglia, notably achieving an impressive overall result, along with a 1-2-3-4-5 class win in the 1954 Carrera Panamericana road race. The 1900 was the last Alfa Romeo chassis to be offered in quantity to the carrozzerias. A large number of futuristic shapes resulted from these partnerships, including the radical series of B.A.T. Alfas by Bertone. This particular unit was coachbuilt by prestigious workshop Pininfarina, and was one of two units with this shape sold new in Spain via the official Alfa Romeo importer RUGICO (Ruiz Gimenez & Co). It was first registered in Madrid -as still today can be seen in its number plates- , but its first owner was the wife of Mr. Jose Banus, the architect who created the world famous "Puerto Banus" in Marbella. Little is known about its first years, apart from a piece which appeared in Spanish newspaper ABC about a run over in which the car was involved in Madrid. Years later the car was rescued from an scrapyard by a car enthusiast, who made some modifications on the car and later sold the car to another collector from Reus (Catalonia), who kept the car garaged for decades. Around ten years ago, the car was finally purchased by a noted collector from Barcelona, who commissioned and extensive restoration which was carried in Italy by the well known workshop "Establimento Farelli". It took seven years to return this 1900 to the totally mint and original condition which shows today. the car is now back in Spain, and has been little used since its restoration was finished recently. Now it is a vehicle ready to be enjoyed in all kind of events such as the Mille Miglia, event for which the car is eligible.
