1 Thaler issued during the reign of Empress Maria Theresa of the Austrian Empire. Zilver Coin. The Latin lettering reads: “M · THERESIA · D · G · R · IMP · HU · BO · REG · S”, which translates to “Maria Theresia, by the grace of God, empress of the Romans, queen of Hungary and Bohemia.” The reverse displays the coat of arms of Maria Theresia on a double-crowned shield. The shield is divided into four fields representing Hungary, Bohemia, Burgundy, and Burgau (Günzburg). The inner shield bears the coat of arms of Austria. The Latin legend reads: “ARCHID · AVST · DUX · BURG · CO · TYR · 1780 · ☓”, which translates to “Archduchess of Austria, duchess of Burgundy, countess of Tyrol.” The edge of the coin features the embossed Latin inscription: “IUSTITIA ET CLEMENTIA”, meaning “Justice and mercy”.
