Some of the most beloved lighting designs that Weisdorf put into production with Lyfa include the conch Hanging Lamp (1963). Because Weisdorf’s designs tended to involved intricate, overlapping layers of metal —an eye-catching composition for reducing glare—Lyfa sold his work as “prestige lighting.” This is not “just”a lamp...this is a light “sculpture”... Louis Weisdorf, born in 1939, is a well-known Danish architect and industrial designer who has made a clear mark in his field. In 1954, he was one of the youngest ever to graduate from the Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen. Weisdorf worked for Tivoli in Copenhagen for 10 years as an assistant to chief architect Simon P. Henningsen, and it was here that he designed the Konkylie lamp, which opened his eyes to lighting design. The lamp in anodized gold hung in the trees in Tivoli Gardens until recently. In 1967, Weisdorf opened his own architectural firm in Copenhagen, where he shared premises with Ole Panton (Verner Panton's brother), and he undertook assignments for both national and international clients, including a close collaboration with both Verner Panton and Poul Henningsen. He continued to explore uniform slats and their ability to guide light and created e.g. Turbo Pendel, which won the iF Design Award. He was fascinated by the simple design principle with the repetitive shape of the slats, which gave such great flexibility in appearance and at the same time protected against glare from all angles.
