A. E van Giffen - De Hunebedden in Nederland Atlas - 1925

A. E van Giffen - De Hunebedden in Nederland. Atlas - A. Oosthoek, Utrecht, 1925 - Bound in linen, Hardcover - Oblong, 52 x 33 cm It weighs approx. 6 kilograms. Without pagination, with 154 illustrations, complete. The original set consists of two text bindings and an atlas, this lot only contains the atlas. The author, A. E. van Giffen, was director of the Biologisch-Archaeologisch Instituut in Groningen, and is famous for his archaeological studies, especially in the Northern Netherlands. The atlas consists of two parts. The first part consists of a complete inventory of all dolmens in The Netherlands with 116 illustrations. Often on the left illustration a photo of the discussed dolmen next to a detailed drawing based on the scale of the length, width and position of all separate stones. All these drawings give a special specific image of the dolmen in The Netherlands in 1925. Illustrations 117-120 with overview maps and supplements. The second part in this binding (illustrations 120-154) contains additionally detailed information about some specific dolmen. Several photos, height lines, findings, profiles. For this there are often several illustrations per dolmen used. In good condition. This concerns a former library copy. Of this, there are still signs in the book (see photos), like stamps and safety strips. The linen binding has stains, is discoloured and has wear on the corners and the spine. On the top front a water stain. The book block is sturdy in the binding. The flyleaves have foxing, the illustrations themselves hardly to not at all. The larger fold-out illustrations have a tear here and there in the margins, not in the depictions themselves. In the past the book block has been here and there enforced with tape. Very rare book. Will be sent by registered mail.
