Tiara - vintage - 5 carat diamond

Beautiful vintage, Dutch tiara, made of jewels, with 159 rose cut diamonds, of approx. 5 carat in total. In very good condition. Things Of Beauty Are A Joy For Ever..... A tiara is a type of crown, which orginates from the Persian تاره tara, later on this was carried over to Latin as 'tiara'. The origin of the high tiara lies in Mesopotamia, where they used high, cylinder-shaped crowns. Thanks to the Greeks, this form of the tiara was introduced in Europe. One of the most well-known tiaras is the high, white enamelled cap with three crowns, this tiara was used up until 1963 at the crowning of a pope. In modern times, the most common tiara is a (half) round item of head jewellery for women, decorated with precious stones. In the 19th century, this tiara developed itself into a status symbol for women of high status in the western world. Some people believe that only aristocratic women were allowed to wear a tiara, but that's not true. A tiara can be worn by all women, on occasions where the 'white tie' dress code is enforced. Occasions like a gala, for example. It's expected from women that they wear a formal, long evening dress, with preference that the shoulders and cleavage get somewhat left bare; with a dress like that, you need large, striking items of jewellery. According to tradition however, tiaras may not be worn if the gala is being held at a hotel. Bought in 2007 by the renowned Esmann Juweliers (diamond retailer since 1889) from Utrecht. Maker's mark ~ J. Rozendaal ~ Hoorn 1884-1923
