Authentic Antique Copper with Bronze Opium Pipe, 1890s
Unusual handcrafted Elephant Opium Pipe from circa 1890. The item has a beautiful patina. The seller who I got the opium pipe from featured it on a Dutch television antique show, ‘Tussen Kunst and Kitch’, a few years ago It was dated circa 1890, from the late Qing dynasty. This dynasty was sometimes referred to as the "Manchu dynasty” in foreign language sources.
The Pipe has a length of 24 cm and is made out of copper and bronze. It is quite heavy for its size. The elephant is beautifully handcrafted and the decoration on the stem itself is very detailed. As with every antique item, there are some signs of wear; the stem wiggles a bit, but is still firmly attached and does not come out. As the pipe has been used in the past, there is some discolouration inside the bowl, but that makes it a unique item with history, so I have not made any attempts to clean it as I feel it will hurt the value and authenticity of the item.
Although not made for decoration purposes but for use, this opium pipe is a great, highly decorative antique piece which will add character to any room.
Year: 1890S / Late Qing dynasty
Origin: Asia (China or Thailand)
Condition: Good. Nice patina, could be cleaned to make it shiny, but the natural oxidation of the metal is simply gorgeous.
Wear: Wear consistent with age and use. Minor fading.
Length: 24 cm (9.45 inches)
Please look at the photos as they are part of the description. I will pack the opium pipe very well and send it by registered mail.
