A Penca or Penca de Balangandan, is a traditional Brazilian piece of jewellery fitted with different charms. The upper part is has two birds on either side as a reference to Africa and Brazil. This rattle has 11 fetishes hanging from it, depicting i.a. an orange, a cob of corn, a pomegranate (fertility), a papaya, a wooden arm with a silver-coloured bracelet and a water jug. Eleven pieces in total. The handle has different birds on both sides. They are supposed to be lucky charms or amulets, but it is also said that they show the value of a slave. Historically it is associated with Afro-Brazilian traditions and cultures adhered to by plantation workers.
