EGYPTIAN WHITE STEATITE SCARAB WITH INSCRIPTION SYSTRUM HATHOR NICE FIGURE ON THE BASE! VERY FINE QUALITY AND DETAILS! Hyksos Period ca 1650–1550 BC Hathor, in ancient Egyptian religion, goddess of the sky, of women, and of fertility and love. Hathor’s worship originated in early dynastic times (3rd millennium BCE). The name Hathor means “estate of Horus” and may not be her original name. Her principal animal form was that of a cow, and she was strongly associated with motherhood. Hathor was closely connected with the sun god Re of Heliopolis, whose “eye” or daughter she was said to be. In her cult centre at Dandarah in Upper Egypt, she was worshipped with Horus. Scarabs, from Latin scarabaeus (“beetle”), which in turn comes from Greek karabos (“beetle”; “crayfish”), were artistic depictions of the Egyptian dung beetle. In Egyptian mythology, these insects were linked to the Sun God Ra, who after his death in the Underworld, was reborn as a scarab. Used as amulets, seals and to fulfil commemorative functions, scarabs were an important element of dress. Their undersides frequently feature hieroglyphic or geometric designs to identify their owners or ward off evil spirits. Due to their small, abstract nature, scarabs cannot normally be closely dated generally. Size: 1.9 CM LARGE FINE QUALITY INTACT Provenance: Private collection, E.S., England, acquired before 1970-1980. NOTE: Sorry for the bad quality of the images, the scarab it's more white steatite and very fine carved the details!
