FIRST edition. Complete and in superb condition. The plates are from stone, that is, lithographs, but produced by hand. The author in fact decided to publish a small manual in octavo size towards the end of the publication of the folio ('Handleiding tot de kennis der artsenij-gewassen, welke in de Nederlandsche apotheek zijn opgenomen. Voornamelijk ingerigt ten behoeve van hen, die, zich der genees-, heel- of artsenij-mengkunde wijdende)', in 1837. This has some black and white folding plates. This 1837 book is a reworking of an earlier manual by the author: 'Kruidkundig leerboek, inzonderheid voor hen, die tot de artsenijmengkunde worden opgeleid '(Amsterdam, 1829). But it is evident that the folio volumes here were designed to illustrate and to accompany a range of Dutch works from the period. Bound in three-quarter red calf and marbled boards. Some shelf wear to edges of covers, but a lovely clean copy of a very scarce and desirable book.
