Second and best edition of Abraham Bloemaert's famous "Tekenboek" illustrated by Frederik Bloemaert after his father's designs. Illustrated with a frontisp. (n° 1) overlaid with chiaroscuro, and 165 engraved plates numbered 2-166 of which 7 duplicates overlaid with chiaroscuro (n. 80, 94, 95, 108, 137, 144 and 145) including multiple studies of heads, feet, hands, nudes, putti, costumed figures, animals, seen in varied poses, from different angles and under varied light and shadow conditions. Particular are the chiaroscuro engravings whereby an ochre colour gives a dramatic clair-obscure feature to the prints. Besides H. Goltzius, A. Bloemaert and his son were among the earliest to adopt the chiaroscuro woodcut technique in their engravings. He became the artistic father and successful teacher of many Utrecht masters. Therefore his influence cannot be underestimated. This edition contains 47 more pl. than Bloemaert's very rare first self-issued engraved compilation c. 1650/56 which is known under the title "Artis Apellae Liber". Also, the 7 chiaroscuros, not present in what is considered the first ed. of the "Tekenboek" (Visscher 1679/1702), make this ed. the most preferred one. Ref. STCN. Hollstein II, p. 86, 36-155.
