Statuette of a bull from the Indus Valley Civilisation. This piece is made from terracotta and adorned with dark stripes across its body and on its large hump. The facial features are painted on, featuring a rounded eyes and a special marking on the forehead of the bull. The horns are painted black and tower over the body. On the behind, there is a small tail added for detail. The design is subtle, yet clearly resembles the intended animal.
The Indus Valley Civilisation refers to a North West Indian Bronze-Age civilisation which inhabited the modern day Punjabi region of the country from c. 3300-1300 BC. were accustomed to creating small terracotta figurines, and of those which took the form of zoomorphic characters, the cow was one of the most popular. Other animals included bears, monkeys and dogs. Bulls also featured in the Indus Valley Civilisation art forms.
