Nicknamed "health liquor", the Chartreuse Verte was developed in 1840 and titled 55%. Its colour earned it to be officially named Chartreuse Verte by Father Garnier, prosecutor and head of liquors at the time. This edition was produced in Tarragona, Spain, where the monks opened a distillery following their expulsion from the Grande Chartreuse by the authorities of the Third Republic, then ruled by Emile Combes, fiercely anticlerical, after the victory of the Left Bloc in the 1902 elections. Even if the monks recovered their mark as early as 1929, the Tarragona distillery remained in operation until 1989.
