Fine example of Korwar style carving of northwest New Guinea, particularly the Geelvink Channel region, in which bold, angular lines contrast with delicate, curvilinear, organic forms in the same piece of sculpture. This korwar statue, a figural image that is associated with ancestor worship and is believed to provide a residence for souls of distinguished persons. It is carved in an erect posture and has a head overly large in proportion to the small body. The combination of raw carving and divergent surface treatments represents a strictly local tradition that cannot be found outside the region. If you look at the photos you will see the patina and state of the old (teak) wood which ensure its originality and age. Beautiful collectors item / museum piece.
