Contemp. half calf over dark green shagreen boards; spine with 4 raised bands, title gilt. Worn at the corners, but in very good condition; edges sprinkled 1 page loose, some minor tears not affecting the text.. Vol. 36 (1887); 702 pp., 24 beautiful full-coulour chromolithographed plates (1 double page), 2 lithographed large plates and 174 text illustrations. 1 plate loose. All full-coulour plates bound at the back of the vol.; almost all plates in good condition: 1 plate damaged. Contemp. half cloth over marbled boards, crude label on spine, spine almost loose. Worn, but inside good. Two volumes of this interesting magazine, with nice plates, the first one in very good condition, the second one in good condition. * Eduard August von Regel (1815 - 1892) was a German horticulturalist and botanist. He ended his career serving as the Director of the Russian Imperial Botanical Garden of St. Petersburg. As a result of naturalists and explorers sending back biological collections, Regel was able to describe and name many previously unknown species from frontiers around the world. In 1852 he founded the magazine Gartenflora, in which he described many new species. Carl Ludwig Max Wittmack (1839 – 1929) was a German botanist. In 1874, he became affiliated with the University of Berlin. He was professor of Botany at the Agricultural College in Berlin (1880-1913), professor of botany at the University of Veterinary Medicine in Berlin (1880-1920), director of the Experiment Station of the Association of German Müller (1875-1905), a member of the department for seed cultivation in the German Agricultural Society (1883-1924), and Director of the Agricultural Institute (1889-91 and 1910-13). From 1887, he was editor of the magazine Gartenflora (from the Vereins zur Beförderung des Gartenbaues in den preussischen Staaten), founded in 1852 by the German botanist Eduard August von Regel. ** This lot is part of an important collection that will be auctioned in the coming months through the Catawiki Collection Service.
