The contemporary account of an eventful Victorian naval expedition wich sough the whereabouts of the famed arctic explorer Franklin - sadly without succes. Written and illustrated by the master of the Resolute. Folding partially hand-coloured map, 8 hand-coloured lithograph plates, 24 text illustrations. XL. and -not mentioned in the book a nice (repaired) folding map (ca. 50 x 21 cm) - not mentioned in the book. First edition. Library stamps. Although officially part of Belcher's 1852-54 expedition, the Resolute commanded by Henry Kellet and the Intrepid commanded by Francis Leopold McClintock undertook a separate exploration of Melville Island. The authors of this journal served as the master aboard the Resolute. After extensive sledge journeys across the island, the ship became icebound during the expedition's second winter and was abandoned. It later drifted, was recovered by an american whaler, and returned to Queen Victoria as a gift. Written and illustrated by the master of the Resolute. Book ex library copy. Professionally rebound.
