IMPORTANT FIRST EDITION ON GEOMETRY AND MATH "Pratique de la Géométrie" by Sébastien LECLERC the "Graveur du Roi" Louis XIV, published in Paris MDCLXIX (1669).The work is enriched with 82 finely engraved copper plates, including the extra illustrated title which explain the definitions, the construction of figures with lines, planes, angles, medians, their application and the elaboration of constructions. All the mathematics needed to make precise calculations and trigonometry are illustrated with practical examples. This is "one of the most attractive mathematical works ever published."- Hofer, Baroque Book Illustration, pp. 14 & 32. Sébastien LECLERC's style of illustration strongly influenced the 18th-century French vignettists, prefiguring the grace and elegance of the best French rococo. LECLERC (1637-1714), a native of Lorraine, adapted the technique of his countryman Jacques Callot (1592-1635). Professor of geometry and perspective at the Royal Academy of Arts and Sciences, LECLERC also worked for Louis XIV as "Graveur du Roi." Description & Condition: In-12mo (H 154 x W 95 mm or 6.1 by 3.8 inches) pages [8] + 41 + 139, [8]. Antique hard parchment binding with titles and date in gold lettering on the spine, in excellent condition, very solid, only few traces of wear. Ex Libris vignette: Le commandant Vicomte Raymond de Plantin de Villeperdrix, Chevalier de la Légion d'honneur 1850-1922. Paper slightly yellowed by age, stains and gore in the central part between the the pages in the white margins which do not affect the beautiful illustrations, which are intact. Numbering errors on the pages with inversions of illustrations, often corrected with annotations by the previous owner. Woodworm work on some pages, but only on the white margins and with ancient restoration. Some writing on the margins in ancient calligraphy. BEAUTIFUL FIRST EDITION. Leclerc joined the Académie Royale de Peinture et de Sculpture in 1672 and taught perspective there. He worked for Louis XIV, being made "graveur du Roi" (attached to the Cabinet du Roi), doing engraving work for the royal house.
