Since there is limited regional distribution of such rock along the Nile Valley, and because the chemical composition of each bsaltic lava flow is unique, it has been possible to source the stone used in the production of these vessels. Of the five known basalt sources in Egytp, only the Haddadin basalt flow near modern Cairo ha provided a direct material and chemical composition match to Predynastic stone containers like this one. This correlates with the typological form of these vessels, since footed speciments in pottery are hallmark of the Maadian communities that lived in this part of Egypt. Thus jars that show this type of base Upper Egypt can be regarded as exports from Lower Egypt and demostrate the interaction of these two areas of Egypt. The lug handles may have allowed the vessel to be suspended or permitted cord to pass through so that a lid could be secured over the vessel mouth.
