In het voorjaar van 1985 kwam Sony als eerste fabrikant in Europa op de markt met 8 mm videoapparatuur: de CCD-V8, een superieure camera/recorder met vrijwel onbegrensde mogelijkheden. Sony brengt een compleet programma 8 mm apparatuur met een fantastische kwaliteit, die men tot nu toe niet voor mogelijk had gehouden.
Video8 is een analoog videosysteem voor amateurs, geïntroduceerd in 1985. Gestandaardiseerd door een groot aantal elektronicafabrikanten, waaronder Philips, Sony en Matsushita. Dankzij het kleine formaat van de videobanden en de in verhouding lage prijs werd dit systeem een groot succes. Video8 heeft niets te maken met Super 8.

Het is interessant om te zien dat deze nieuwe lichtgewicht camcorder werd aangekondigd in de uitgave van Popular Science Magazine van september 1985.
Dit compacte bandopnamesysteem van Sony gebruikte een videoband van 8 mm breed in een compactcassette. Van
de website van Sony in 2018: "De lichtste camcorder ter wereld bij lancering, met een gewicht van 1,0 kg. Dit model is uitsluitend bedoeld voor
opnames. De CCD-M8 markeerde het begin van de Handycam-serie. Hij is aanzienlijk kleiner dan de CCD-V8. De De lenscilinder
heeft een schuifdeksel en in de handgreep is het batterijcompartiment verwerkt.
De eersteklas Handycam biedt gemak en eenvoud die lijkt op een volautomatische fotocamera en was uitzonderlijk eenvoudig met één hand te bedienen.
Op de geschiedenispagina van de Sony-website staat dat de CCD-V8E (hieronder) was 's werelds eerste 8 mm-camcorder,
maar de Sony CCD-M8E "Handycam" kwam tegelijkertijd uit in 1985.

Sony's website in 2018: "The world's lightest camcorder at launch, weighing 1.0 kg. This model is intended exclusively for
recordings. The CCD-M8 marked the beginning of the Handycam series. It is considerably smaller than the CCD-V8. The The lens barrel
has a sliding lid and the battery compartment is incorporated in the handle.
The premium Handycam offers convenience and simplicity similar to a fully automatic still camera and was exceptionally easy to operate with one hand.
The history page of the Sony website states that the CCD-V8E (below) was the world's first 8mm camcorder,
but the Sony CCD-M8E "Handycam" was released at the same time in 1985.
