Rare, sturdy Japanese wooden tansu 箪笥 (chest of drawers). Fully restored, cleaned and waxed.
The top surface extends over the sides, and the front features a full-width removable panel. Equipped with a sturdy iron circular lock plate adorned with a raised knob shaped like a chrysanthemum, above a ‘warabite’-shaped bail handle.
Revealing an interior of 12 drawers of different size. Each of the 6 adjacent drawers in the middle with a partition and removable compartment with slidable cover. The lower right one, also fitted with partitions.
The smooth running drawers are equipped with red lacquered copper pull-rings and ‘hirute’-shaped handle. With the centre bottom drawer with a sturdy iron ‘hirute’ handle.
The cabinet is very spacious and ideal for easy storage due to the many different type of compartments.
The sides equipped with sturdy en-suite handles.
It is made of precious hinoki (cypress) wood varnished in a sought after warm brown hue, a colour that we like to call ‘golden oak’. The drawers are made of indigenous kiri (paulownia) wood.
Period: Japan – Taishô period/Early Shôwa period (Early 20th century).
